Penang council takes down 70 banners of Najib

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) has taken down 70 banners featuring the image of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The removed banners were at Anson Road, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Penang Road, Bukit Gambir, Bukit Jambul, Datuk Keramat Road and at the Komtar area.
Sixty-nine of the banners, put up to promote a fundraising event on April 2 where Najib is scheduled to be present, were removed on Friday.
The other, of a cultural carnival on April 2 for which Najib was indicated as the guest of honour, was among six banners removed at Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling yesterday.
The other five banners promoted courses, seminars and various programmes.
MPPP Public Health Standing Committee alternate chairman Ong Ah Teong said the council’s enforcement team removed the banners after receiving public complaints.
“The council is merely carrying out its duty of removing banners without MPPP permits.
“We removed them regardless of their content and who put them up. We advise the public to apply for a permit to avoid any losses. The enforcement action against illegal banners is ongoing,” Ong said yesterday.
He said the permit for each banner costs RM22 and another RM30 as deposit per month.
After an MPPP full council meeting, Ong had announced on Friday that the council would hire a private company to remove illegal banners and streamers in the municipality.
