Dato Seri Wong Soon Koh has been the four-term assemblyman for Bawang Assan in Sibu and had built the constituency from scratch to transform to it's present development.
The assemblymen from SUPP was the State Environment and Public Health Minister
Wong believed there were really no issues affecting the people in this constituency. He said, “All issues affecting the people of Bawang Assan or rather the issues played up by the opposition, we will try to resolve them.”
However, such will not be the case come election. Wong is challenged by DAP Alice Lau Kiong Yieng in a straight fight. DAP have been aggressive in raising issues against BN incumbents.
Free Malaysia Today here reported that Alice Lau's challenge poses a problem for SUPP. Alice is the daughter of a prominent and influential businessman and a Barisan Nasional (BN) ally.
Alice’s father is Sibu United Chinese Associations (UCA) adviser Lau Cheng Kiong, who incidentally is Wong’s buddy. Lau is also Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party’s (SPDP) Pelawan division chairman. SPDP is a component party within the Sarawak BN coalition.
Lau has remained silent over his daughter’s move to the opposition and has shown no signs of betraying his friend. On the other hand, Alice said, “Since my father has not objected, I treat this as support.”
