Barisan Nasional lawmaker Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan demands that the Penang-led DAP government to come clean on the approved Batu Kawan solar panel plant as similar project in China was declared an environmental disaster.
The MP for Kota Belud told The Mole: “Isn’t it hypocritical for (Penang Chief Minister) Lim Guan Eng to protest against Lynas when this project (the solar panel manufacturing plant) have had a notorious record for its hazardous risks on both the environment and humans.”
“This is an extreme example of double standard practised by the DAP. Lim can wear green t-shirt and hold protest in Penang over issues in other states but when it happens in his own backyard, he does not even give a damn,” Abdul Rahman said.
He was commenting on a blog post in Stop The Lies which pointed that the solar panel manufacturing plant, which Germany's Robert Bosch GmbH plans to build in Batu Kawan, will be similar to a plant in China which was forced to close down due to health risks it posed to the local population.
The post stated the reason for the closing was due to – effluent from a large solar cell manufacturer in Zhejiang Province had wiped out a local fishing industry and the manufacturing of Photovoltaics would pollute the environment and affect human health.
Thus, Abdul Rahman who is also the Sabah BN secretary urged people of Penang and non-governmental organisations to not only seek explanation from the state government, but also to look into the issue thoroughly and raise awareness as well.
“People and environmentalists have condemned and put Lynas project under huge scrutiny even after it has been approved by the relevant authorities. They should take this project in Batu Kawan seriously,” he added.
Abdul Rahman said he would bring up this issue in Parliament to seek Lim’s response.
Penang state executive councillor Phee Boon Poh earlier this week said the solar panel manufacturing plant project in Batu Kawan would proceed and insisted it was safe as several bodies including the International Energy Agency and Department of Environment had vetted the project before the Penang Government gave its go-ahead.
However MCA central committee member Datuk Ti Lian Ker yesterday said he found the justification baffling as the same agencies were the ones that assessed the Lynas rare earth refinery plant to be environmentally friendly and that led to the Pahang Government's approval for the project to be set up in the State.themole.
Sudahlah nelayan hidupnya kais pagi makan pagi.
