GUAN ENG SAMPAI TAHAP KURANG WARAS FITNAH UMNO. @DZainalAbidin

The High Court hearing the defamation suit filed by Penang Umno liaison chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman against Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was told that Lim's action in issuing false statement was meant to tarnish Umno's image.

Zainal Abidin, 52, said that the articles, which were published in Keadilan Daily on July 3 last year and in Suara Keadilan on July 5 last year, were also meant to show that Umno was a party with no ethic and principle for supporting an action which could lead to violence.

The articles, he said, which mentioned his name also quoted Lim as saying that Umno was involved in organising the demonstrations at the Komtar building and on the Penang bridge on July 1 last year.

Zainal Abidin denied the allegation by Lim and said that Umno would not get involved in a demonstration that would jeopardise public order and security.

He told the court that there was no restriction for Umno members to join bodies like the Hawkers Association, Seni Silat Gayung Association, etc.

As such, the presence of Umno members at the demonstrations at the Komtar building and Penang Bridge on July 1 last year could not be used to gauge Umno's participation in the event, he added.

Questioned by Lim's lawyer, Jagdeep Singh Deo, whether there was any mention of the word "organise" in the article published by Suara Keadilan, Zainal Abidin said the word used was "involvement".

Zainal Abidin also said he was not at the locations and did not know the number of Umno members who were involved.

He also did not know about Senator Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor's presence there.

Zainal Abidin, 52, filed the suit on Oct 24 last year.

Apart from Lim, who is DAP secretary-general, the other defendants named are Parti Keadilan Rakyat as the owner of the electronic news portal Keadilan Daily and newspaper Suara Keadilan, Segmen Fleksibel Sdn Bhd as the publishing company of Keadilan Daily and Suara Keadilan, and its chief sub-editor, Fazallah Pit.

Zainal Abidin is seeking RM30mil in compensation, interest, cost and other relief deemed appropriate by the court and an injunction to prevent all the defendants from continuing to issue or publish the allegedly defamatory statements.

The hearing before Justice Amelia Tee Hong Geok Abdullah continues on Monday. - Bernama
